Uefa Cup round-up

Three Barclays Premier League sides made it through to the group stages of the Uefa Cup.

Everton secured their place as a battling second-half display brought a 3-2 win over Metalist in their first-round second-leg match. They looked on their way out of the competition at the break when Metalist took the lead and moved ahead 2-1 on aggregate through Edmar in the 21st minute.

The game took a different complexion in the 48th minute when Joleon Lescott pulled Everton level. He swept the ball in from almost on the goal-line after Steven Pienaar had delivered the cross.

But their hopes of building on that strike lasted only four minutes as Hicham Mahdoufi restored Metalist's one-goal advantage. But Everton showed their battling qualities to draw level on aggregate in the 72nd minute when sub Victor Anichebe released McFadden and he swept the ball home after a quick turn and shot.

The Goodison side now had the advantage due to the away goals rule and Anichebe sealed a fine victory by taking advantage of a defensive muddle two minutes from time.

Tottenham Hotspur sealed their passage in the group stages with a 1-1 draw against Anorthosis Famagusta in Cyprus.

Fabio De Matos Pereira, known as Fabinho, had given the hosts the lead at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium. But Robbie Keane came off the bench to save Spurs from an embarrassing defeat after establishing a 6-1 lead from the first leg.

Bolton Wanderers are also through thanks to Nicolas Anelka who stepped off the substitutes' bench to fire a 68th-minute winner at home to Rabotnicki Kometal. Anelka's sixth goal of the season, a looping header from fellow substitute Stelios Giannakopoulos, gave the Trotters a 2-1 aggregate victory over the Macedonian league leaders.

Blackburn Rovers crashed out despite winning 2-1 at home to Larissa. Trailing 2-0 after the first leg in Greece, a well-taken strike from Silva Cleyton after 17 minutes left Rovers needing four to progress.

Matt Derbyshire scored a retaken penalty in first-half injury-time after David Dunn was felled and Stephen Warnock fired a fine second on the volley from David Bentley's cross six minutes after the break - but it was too little, much too late.
