Renato Augusto was hailed as one of the best products of CR Flamengo's youth academy in recent years, and had been close to a deal with Palermo in 2007. His style of play, combining decisive passes with good control of the ball, pace and dribbling efforts, have led him to being capped for the national team at the under-20 level; his career with Flamengo had nevertheless been plagued by injuries. Renato Augusto signed for Bayer Leverkusen for an unknown fee, thought to be worth some 10 million euros, 60% of which retained by Flamengo.The remaining 40% were owned by the Traffic and MFD investment groups, that paid 1.5 million euros each for a share in Renato Augusto's transfer fee, earlier in 2008.

The man from Sugar Loaf Mountain is considered to be a complete footballer who not only has perfect technical ability but who has convinced Bayer 04 scouts that he is also a team player. And the 20-year-old Renato Augusto also appears to be extremely mature for his age.
Bayer 04 fans can once again proudly wave their Brazil flags in the stadium. The Leverkusen squad again has two players from the country of the five time World Champions. The transfers of Renato Soares de Oliveira Augusto and Henrique Adriano Buss continue a well-established tradition at Bayer 04 that lapsed for a season after Juan and Athirson left the club.
And even if only half the media reports on the new signing from Flamengo Renato Augusto are accurate then Bayer have hit the jackpot with this one. The 20-year-old has a great reputation. His previous coach Ney Franco talks of the “new Kaka”, his fellow countryman Dede sees him as “a mixture Diego and Lincoln,” and the midfielder has been the “absolute favourite” with the Bayer 04 scouting section since the 2005 U-17 World Cup in Peru. Renato is highly regarded everywhere for his charisma, his astonishing maturity as well as for his footballing ability.
Renato’s strengths also include great dribbling skills, excellent passes to the front men, accurate shooting ability with both his left and right feet. Norbert Ziegler, Bayer’ chief scout also praises the newcomer’s “incredible capacity for team work”. “He looks like he’s got 300 plus professional games under his belt,” reports Ziegler. “Even when he’s put under pressure or is playing at speed he always uses his extraordinary talent to choose the right option.” That was the case at the last year’s U-20 World Cup in Canada where the Bayer scouts watched him play on five different occasions. Along with Pato, who is now at AC Milan, he was the best player in the Brazil squad.
It sounds like the Bayer fans can look forward to seeing an almost complete player filling the creative central midfield role. Renato Augusto, who has signed for Bayer 04 up to 2013, will wear the number eight shirt and, according to Ziegler’s assessment, will not need a “long time to bed in”. The only possible problem for players like Renato Augusto is getting used to the central European climate. But if that’s the only issue...
