Bellamy undergoes surgery

West Ham United striker Craig Bellamy is set to return in two weeks after undergoing hernia surgery in Germany.

Bellamy had the same operation as Michael Owen at the clinic of specialist Dr Ulrike Muschaweck on Thursday. Muschaweck has reported the surgery a success and expects the Welshman back in action within a fortnight.

"The examination showed a so-called sportsman's groin, which I operated on," she said. "The operation allows him to make a quick return to full activity. That means within eight to 12 days he will be back to full activity without any restriction.

"The operation technique was the same technique which I carried out on Michael Owen."

The Hammers decided to send Bellamy to Munich after he was forced to miss their last three matches with the troublesome groin injury.

Bellamy will also miss this weekend's match with Aston Villa, but should be fit to return against Sunderland on 21st October. He is likely to miss Wales'

Euro 2008 qualifier against Cyprus next Saturday but could be in contention for the match with San Marino four days later.
